Will Prepare Residents and Visitors for Emergencies, Share Updated Best Practices and Guidance Developed by Subject Matter Experts, Community Members; Continues Mayor Lurie’s Work Since First Weeks in Office to Give San Franciscans Tools to Keep Themselves and Their Families Safe in an Emergency

SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie and the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management (DEM) today launched “ReadySF, a comprehensive new campaign designed to help residents, workers, and visitors prepare for emergencies. As the first step of the ReadySF campaign, DEM launched sf.gov/ReadySF, replacing the SF72.org site with updated tools, resources, and interactive features tailored to San Francisco’s evolving risks.

The new emergency preparedness campaign represents another step taken by Mayor Lurie to improve the safety and preparedness of San Francisco. Early in his administration, Mayor Lurie participated in a training through the San Francisco Fire Department’s (SFFD) Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT), a free community-based program that teaches the basics of personal readiness and prevention to encourage all San Franciscans to be prepared for any emergency. Before that, he hosted a multiagency emergency preparedness exercise, part of the city’s efforts to ensure that public safety departments and residents are ready in the event of an emergency. Last month, on his 100th day in office, Mayor Lurie marked the 119th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake, paying tribute to the first responders who worked for days to manage the fallout.

“A safe San Francisco needs a reliable, secure, and effective emergency preparedness system,” said Mayor Lurie. “We’re bringing everybody to the table—from government leaders to community members—to create a campaign to ensure our residents, visitors, and city are prepared for any emergency. While our first responders are always ready to respond to a crisis, ReadySF will give San Franciscans the tools to prepare and keep themselves and their families safe.”

“ReadySF is an important step toward a more resilient San Francisco,” said Mary Ellen Carroll, Executive Director of DEM. “Preparedness is a partnership between all levels of government, communities, and individuals. By providing accessible, up-to-date, actionable information and tools, we’re empowering everyone to take steps that will save lives in emergencies.”

“When an emergency occurs, San Francisco will be ready,” said San Francisco Police Department Chief Bill Scott. “Our city’s public safety agencies are always developing ways to prepare for any emergency. ReadySF gives the public additional tools and information to help them stay safe.”

"A safe San Francisco is an all-team effort.  We applaud the mayor's vision of supporting all our communities to keep our neighborhoods prepared,” said SFFD Chief Dean Crispen. “Our Firefighters, Paramedics, EMTs and the Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) stand ready to ensure SF is resilient and ready for any challenge.”

Developed in partnership with Civic Edge Consulting, key features of ReadySF include:

  • Personalized Emergency Planning Tools: ReadySF provides a step-by-step guide to get ready for any emergency and resources to help individuals and families create customized emergency plans, including checklists for assembling go bags and stay boxes.
  • Interactive Hazard Maps: ReadySF includes two new interactive GIS maps, in addition to an improved tsunami hazard map, including:
    • A storm and flood hazard map with the following layers: PUC 100-year storm flood risk, FEMA national flood hazard layer, PG&E outages, sandbag distribution sites, weather radar, and NWS hazard products.
    • A heatwave resource map with the following layers: cooling centers (libraries and community centers), public pools, public water fountains, PG&E outages, air quality, and NWS hazard products.
  • Comprehensive Hazard Guides: The site offers detailed guidance on preparing for a range of emergencies specific to San Francisco, including earthquakes, severe storms, urban flooding, extreme heat, poor air quality, power outages, tsunamis, and fires. Each guide includes actionable steps to take before, during, and after an event.
  • Multilingual Accessibility: Recognizing the city's diverse population, ReadySF offers human translated content in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, Filipino, and Vietnamese, ensuring that all community members have access to vital preparedness information. Translations were completed by the City Administrator’s Digital & Data Services and the Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs.
  • Integration with AlertSF: ReadySF encourages everyone to sign up for AlertSF, the city's official emergency notification system, to receive timely alerts and instructions during emergencies. Sign up by texting your ZIP code to 888-777 or visiting AlertSF.org.

The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management coordinates the city's emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and resilience efforts.
