Finding the Way Home: Reconnecting Families Through Compassionate Problem Solving

Tanya’s Journey

Tanya*, a mother fleeing domestic violence, came to San Francisco with her two young children, hoping for a fresh start. They found temporary safety at Hamilton Family Shelter, but the weight of uncertainty was overwhelming. Feeling lost, Tanya called her mother in Georgia—who in turn reached out to our relocation program.

Within days, the team arranged a Greyhound bus to reunite Tanya and her children with family. Tanya called her case manager from each state along the way, her voice filled with relief and hope. On arrival, her grateful mother embraced them all. Our relocation team stayed in touch, offering follow-up support after their reunion.

Joe’s Reunion

During the holidays, hospital staff reached out to our relocation team about Joe—a soft-spoken, disoriented man who had been using emergency services regularly. The team learned that Joe was from Texas and, with his permission, contacted law enforcement to help locate his son.

Once reached, Joe’s son booked the next flight to San Francisco, determined to bring his father home. The reunion at the hospital was deeply emotional. With help from a nurse and the relocation team team, Joe was prepared for his trip and gently escorted to the car. Father and son set off on the road home—together.

“Moments like these overpower so much of the heartache we see,” said relocation team member Charlene Gandy. “We were determined to get Joe back to his family, and it was powerful to witness this reunion.”
