Vaccine Recommendations

Flu

Everyone age six months and older is recommended to receive a yearly flu vaccine, especially people who are at increased risk for flu complications such as pregnant people and others.

COVID-19

The California Department of Public Health recommends the updated 2026–27 COVID-19 vaccine to:

  • All 6–23 months and 65 years and older
  • All 2–18 years with risk factors or never vaccinated against COVID-19
  • All 19–64 years with risk factors
  • All who are planning pregnancy, pregnant, postpartum, or lactating
  • All who are in close contact with others with risk factors, including healthcare workers
  • All who choose to reduce risk of severe illness

The updated COVID-19 and flu vaccines give you protection from currently circulating strains. The virus strains change over time, and our immunity needs to be updated. That is why it is important to stay current and get the latest version of the vaccines.

What to do

When to get your updated COVID-19 and flu vaccines

We are beginning to see an increase in flu activity and COVID-19 is also circulating. Therefore, now is a good time to get your updated flu and COVID-19 vaccines. It is safe and convenient to get your flu and COVID-19 vaccines at the same time.

Find where to get the COVID-19 and flu vaccines

If you have insurance:

  • Ask your healthcare provider for both vaccines.
  • You can also get the vaccine at CVS, Walgreens, Safeway, Costco, or other retail pharmacies. Book online to make sure your store has the vaccine.
  • Vaccines are covered if you get them at places that take your insurance.

If you do not have insurance:

Sign up to get care with the San Francisco Health Network. They will enroll you in health coverage if you do not have insurance. Once you are covered, you will be able to receive all recommended vaccines, including COVID-19 and flu vaccines, as well as receive care for your other health needs.

Even if you do not have insurance, check with your healthcare provider to see if they have COVID-19 and flu vaccines available at no cost.

SFDPH's immunization clinic, AITC, at 27 Van Ness Ave (by Van Ness and Market) is offering free COVID-19 and flu vaccine for people who are uninsured. For more information, visit sf.gov/aitc

Find out if you should get vaccinated against RSV

New immunization options to protect adults and babies against RSV came out in 2023. RSV is a virus that causes illness similar to a cold. But babies and older adults can sometimes become very sick from RSV and need to be hospitalized.

Because of this, the RSV vaccine is recommended for:

  • Previously unvaccinated adults 75 years and older, and 50-74 with risk factors
  • Previously unvaccinated pregnant people 32-36 weeks gestational age
  • Children younger than 8 months (if birthing parent did not receive RSV vaccine during pregnancy), and 8-19 months with risk factors

RSV vaccines are covered by insurance.

Special cases

Flu and COVID-19 vaccines for persons unable to leave their home (homebound)

The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) has limited capacity to vaccinate individuals in their homes. If you cannot leave your home to receive a flu or COVID-19 vaccine, first try asking your healthcare provider about getting it at your next healthcare visit, or if they can come to your home to vaccinate you. If you are still unable to receive a vaccine, please call (628) 217-6100 to schedule an appointment.

COVID-19 vaccines for children with private insurance who cannot get access to a vaccine

All children in California should be able to get a COVID-19 vaccine from a doctor, clinic or pharmacy covered by their insurance. If your child is privately insured and you are not able to find a place to get your child vaccinated, please contact immunization@sfdph.org
