What to know

Vaccine Recommendations

Flu
Everyone age six months and older is recommended to receive the 2025–26 flu vaccine, especially to people who are at increased risk for flu complications such as pregnant patients and others.

COVID-19
The California Department of Public Health broadly recommends the updated 2025–26 COVID-19 vaccine to:

  • All who are planning pregnancy, pregnant, postpartum, or lactating
  • All 6–23 months and 65 years and older
  • All 2–64 years with risk factors
  • Anyone who was never vaccinated against COVID-19
  • All who are in close contact with others with risk factors, including healthcare workers
  • All who choose protection

The updated COVID-19 and flu vaccines give you protection from currently circulating strains. The virus strains change over time, and our immunity needs to be updated. That is why it is important to stay current and get the latest version of the vaccines.

What to do

When to get your updated COVID-19 and flu vaccines

It is recommended to get your flu vaccine by the end of October because flu season can begin as early as November. However, if you have not gotten vaccinated yet, it's recommended to get your vaccine as soon as possible.

It is safe and convenient to get the COVID-19 vaccine at the same time as the flu vaccine.

Find where to get the COVID-19 and flu vaccines

If you have insurance:

  • Ask your healthcare provider for both vaccines.
  • You can also get the vaccine at CVSWalgreens, Safeway, Costco, or other retail pharmacies. Book online to make sure your store has the vaccine.
  • Vaccines are covered if you get them at places that take your insurance.

If you do not have insurance:

Sign up to get care with the San Francisco Health Network. They will enroll you in health coverage if you do not have insurance. Once you are covered, you will be able to receive all recommended vaccines, including COVID-19 and flu vaccines, as well as receive care for your other health needs.

Even if you do not have insurance, check with your healthcare provider to see if they have COVID-19 and flu vaccines available at no cost.

Find out if you should get vaccinated against RSV

A new vaccine came out in 2023 that protects against RSV. RSV is a virus that causes illness similar to a cold. But babies and older adults can sometimes become very sick from RSV and need to be hospitalized.

Because of this, the RSV vaccine is recommended for:

  • Adults 75 years and older, and 50-74 with risk factors
  • Pregnant patients 32-36 weeks gestational age
  • Children younger than 8 months, and 8-19 months with risk factors

If you received the RSV vaccine last year, you do not need another dose this year.

RSV vaccines are covered by insurance.

Special cases

COVID-19 vaccines for persons unable to leave their home (homebound)

The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) has limited capacity to vaccinate individuals in their homes. If you cannot leave your home to receive a flu or COVID-19 vaccine, first try asking your healthcare provider about getting it at your next healthcare visit, or if they can come to your home to vaccinate you.

Please be advised that homebound vaccinations have ended for the 2025-26 COVID-19 and flu season.

COVID-19 vaccines for children with private insurance who cannot get access to a vaccine

All children in California should be able to get a COVID vaccine from a doctor, clinic or pharmacy covered by their insurance. If your child is privately insured and you are not able to find a place to get your child vaccinated, please contact immunization@sfdph.org
