Signed in Shanghai Marking 46th Anniversary of Sister City Relationship, Memorandum of Understanding Will Begin Three-Year Partnership Between Cities, Expanding Arts and Culture, Tourism; Builds on Mayor Lurie’s Work to Ensure Arts and Culture are Driving San Francisco’s Comeback

SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the cities of San Francisco and Shanghai, marking the 46th anniversary of the sister city relationship on the second day of his first international trip to Shanghai and Seoul. The MOU will establish a three-year framework to expand collaboration across arts and culture, tourism, sports, education, and youth exchange, while strengthening partnerships, connection, and understanding between the two cities.

Signed during Mayor Lurie’s trip to Shanghai and Seoul, the MOU builds on Mayor Lurie’s work to accelerate San Francisco’s economic recovery through the arts. To continue to drive the city’s economic comeback, the mayor has taken steps to strengthen city arts and culture institutions, partnered with the private and philanthropic sectors to contribute to downtown’s recovery, and launched a plan to accelerate the city’s downtown comeback.

“On the 46th anniversary of our sister city relationship, San Francisco and Shanghai are reaffirming our commitment to strengthening cooperation across arts, culture, tourism, education, sports, and civic exchange,” said Mayor Lurie. “Strong global partnerships help our cities share ideas, create opportunities for residents and young people, and deepen the connections between our communities, and I’m honored to be deepening our relationship through this MOU.”

The signing is another milestone of Mayor Lurie’s first international trip as mayor—visiting China and South Korea to strengthen San Francisco’s sister city relationships with Shanghai and Seoul, deepen arts and culture partnerships, and promote tourism to San Francisco.
