Recognize elder abuse signs

Physical abuse and neglect

  • Malnutrition
  • Dehydration
  • Bedsores
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Unseen but suspected physical injury
  • Painful reactions when touched
  • Bruises
  • Skin tears
  • Broken bones
  • Broken teeth

Victim behaviors

  • Agitation or anger
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Defensiveness
  • Depression
  • Fearfulness
  • Helplessness
  • Hesitant to talk openly
  • Giving implausible excuses
  • Non-responsiveness
  • Withdrawn

Caregiver or family abuse

  • The elder may not be given the opportunity to speak for themselves
  • Attitudes of indifference or anger toward the elder
  • Social isolation or restriction of activity of the elder
  • Conflicting accounts of incidents by the family or caregivers
  • Gambling or substance abuse problems from the caregiver

Report elder neglect or abuse

You should report incidents of elder abuse or neglect to San Francisco Adult Protective Services (APS) first.

When to call 911 and what to do

Call 911 if you are experiencing or witnessing an emergency that requires urgent help from police, fire services, or medical personnel. Stay calm and answer all questions. This will not delay response times from emergency services.
