Mayor Lurie's Statement On Board Of Supervisor's Committee Unanimous Vote In Support Of City Budget
Office of the MayorSAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today released the following statement after the Board of Supervisors Budget and Appropriations Committee voted unanimously to advance the city budget:
“San Franciscans made it clear this month that they feel our city is finally moving in the right direction. Thanks to the continued close partnership between the Mayor’s Office and the Board of Supervisors, this budget will keep our city moving forward.
“Last summer, just as our city was getting back on track, the federal government cut hundreds of millions of dollars from healthcare and food assistance that San Franciscans rely on. Facing those cuts and threats of more, we chose to strengthen the social safety net and invest in our LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities. We protected core services and doubled down on building a broad and durable economic recovery, and we did it responsibly—by ending years of government spending money that we don’t have.
“This budget helps families stay on healthcare and food assistance, supports efforts to prevent homelessness, invests in public safety and clean streets, and continues the work of creating the conditions for families, businesses, and communities to thrive. And it builds on the progress we made last year to stabilize the city's finances by reducing our structural deficit, strengthening our reserves to prepare for uncertainty from Washington and Sacramento, and bringing spending more in line with revenues while protecting the services San Franciscans rely on every day.
“I want to thank Board President Rafael Mandelman and Budget Chair Connie Chan; Budget and Appropriations Committee members Supervisors Matt Dorsey, Danny Sauter, and Shamann Walton; and the entire Board of Supervisors for their unprecedented partnership throughout this process. For the second year in a row, city leaders have come together to ensure San Francisco can meet challenges, solve problems, and invest in our future with the resources we have. We also share a deep commitment to our LGBTQ+ community, and I’m grateful we were able to work together to support them in this budget.
“While this budget will keep our city on the right track, we have more work to do to ensure every neighborhood feels the benefits of San Francisco’s recovery. We will deliver an accountable City Hall that works for San Franciscans instead of the insiders and special interests. We will strengthen Muni and protect safe, reliable, and affordable public transit to keep our recovery moving forward. And we will make sure that families can afford to stay and build a life in the city they love.
“In San Francisco, we look out for one another. This is a city on the rise, and we will continue to build a recovery that reaches every neighborhood and leaves no one behind.”
