Office of the MayorNew Cross-Department Strategy Advances Health, Safety, Civic Leadership, Economic Mobility, and Security for Women; Continues Mayor Lurie’s Work to Deliver a City Where Everyone Thrives.
SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today announced the launch of the San Francisco Women’s Agenda in partnership with District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar and the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women (DOSW). The agenda will launch a coordinated, citywide strategy designed to improve outcomes for women across San Francisco.
The launch of the Women’s Agenda continues Mayor Lurie’s work to support women and create a city where everyone can thrive. Last month, the mayor launched his Strong Starts initiative, a new effort to support San Francisco families, mothers, and kids by supporting maternal and infant health. Earlier this year, he announced legislation with Assemblymember Catherine Stefani to support survivors of domestic violence. In his State of the City address, the mayor launched his Family Opportunity Agenda, including steps to ensure every family in San Francisco has access to child care.
“The women’s agenda builds on years of work by advocates, community leaders, and city partners, and marks the beginning of a clear framework for advancing the well-being, leadership, and opportunities for San Francisco’s women and girls. This work is grounded in four core policy pillars that align closely with my administration’s priorities: health, safety, civic leadership and community engagement, and economic mobility and security,” said Mayor Lurie. “Thank you to Supervisor Melgar and the Department on the Status of Women for their leadership—because when women thrive, San Francisco thrives."
“The Women's Agenda provides the framework for meaningful impact that I hope will fundamentally improve the outcomes for women. When women succeed, it will lead to greater gains for us as a society,” said Supervisor Melgar. “I am grateful that the mayor is adopting this as a citywide agenda and is committed to prioritizing the safety, economic advancement, and health of women and non-binary people in San Francisco. I look forward to the collaboration with the mayor, city agencies, and community partners in leading us towards a gender-equitable city.”
“The Women’s Agenda represents San Francisco’s commitment to building a city where all women, girls, non-binary people and their families can thrive,” said Dr. Diana Aroche, DOSW Executive Director. “By aligning our departments and community partners, we are creating a roadmap that centers equity, safety, and opportunity for those most impacted by systemic barriers.”
The Women’s Agenda reflects collaboration across city departments, community-based organizations, and key stakeholders to address systemic challenges through four core pillars: health, safety, civic leadership and community engagement, and economic mobility and security.
The initiative builds on San Francisco’s longstanding work to support women and girls by aligning resources, strengthening partnerships, and establishing measurable outcomes to ensure accountability and impact across all sectors.
Through this agenda, the city will work in partnership with departments including the Department of Public Health, Human Rights Commission, Office of Economic and Workforce Development, Department of Early Childhood, and Law Enforcement agencies such as the Office of the District Attorney to align resources, implement coordinated strategies, and track progress through data-driven reporting.
The Women’s Agenda is organized around four key pillars:
- Health: Advancing holistic health, including reproductive and maternal health and mental well-being.
- Safety: Strengthening prevention and response to gender-based violence and improving safety in public spaces, workplaces, and communities.
- Civic Leadership and Community Engagement: Increasing representation and leadership opportunities for women in civic life.
- Economic Mobility and Security: Expanding pathways that support financial stability, employment opportunities, and long-term economic resilience.
The Women’s Agenda follows extensive engagement with community stakeholders—ensuring that the voices of women across San Francisco communities shape the policies and programs designed to serve them.
The Department on the Status of Women will lead implementation and coordination efforts, working closely with city partners and the Commission on the Status of Women to ensure transparency, accountability, and sustained impact.
