Mayor Lurie Appoints Alan Wong as District 4 Supervisor
Deep Community Ties, Record of Service, and Experience Working for San Francisco Families Will Help Wong Deliver Results for Sunset, Parkside
SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today appointed Alan Wong to represent District 4 on the Board of Supervisors. A lifelong resident of the Sunset, Wong has been a member of the City College Board of Trustees for five years and currently advocates for San Francisco’s children and families through his work at the Children’s Council of San Francisco. He has served in the California Army National Guard since 2009.
“From the very beginning, I’ve been clear about the kind of Supervisor District 4 needs: Someone who lives and breathes the district, and someone who can build bridges within it. Alan Wong is that person, and I am proud to appoint him as the new District 4 supervisor,” said Mayor Lurie. “Throughout my conversations with the residents of the Sunset and Parkside, one message came through clearly: This district needs a supervisor who can be a strong, steady voice on the issues that matter most. With Alan Wong as the supervisor, District 4 will have that voice.”
“The Sunset is the community I love and the only home I’ve ever known. Serving as supervisor is the greatest honor of my life,” said Supervisor Wong. “I will approach this work with a public servant’s heart. As a veteran, I will always put my community and country first—above partisanship or ideology. And I believe the Sunset, and San Francisco, can thrive again.”
Alan Wong has spent his life serving the District 4 community. Born and raised in the Sunset, he is a proud product of San Francisco’s public schools—De Avila Elementary School, Herbert Hoover Middle School, and Abraham Lincoln High School. The son of immigrant parents from Hong Kong, Wong took college courses at City College of San Francisco before graduating from UC-San Diego and later earning a master’s degree in public affairs from the University of San Francisco.
Wong’s career in public service includes experience at City Hall, within the nonprofit sector, and in education serving San Francisco’s young people. He has served as a legislative aide on the Board of Supervisors, worked at the Children’s Council supporting families who depend on child care, and played a central role in early-education advocacy across the city.
Wong has been elected twice to the City College Board of Trustees, including serving as board president. In his tenure on the board, Wong fought to keep free City College alive, protect Cantonese language programs within City College, and ensure City College remains affordable for people across the city.
He has served in the California Army National Guard for more than 15 years, in roles from paralegal specialist to public affairs detachment commander. He has also completed both the San Francisco Fire Department's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) training and the San Francisco Police Department’s Community Police Academy.
“Alan Wong is exactly the kind of steady, community-rooted leader the Sunset deserves. He brings deep experience, a lifelong connection to the neighborhood, and a genuine commitment to public safety, good governance, and ensuring families can thrive,” said Assemblymember Catherine Stefani. “I’m confident he will serve District 4 with integrity and a clear focus on delivering results for the people he represents.”
“I have worked with Alan Wong to expand services for seniors and youth in the Sunset and to advocate at City Hall for resources for children and families,” said Ben Wong, Executive Director of Wah Mei School and lead agency for the Sunset Chinese Cultural District. “Alan is highly qualified to represent District 4 and will be ready to lead the District 4 office and serve constituents on day one.”
“Many Asian families choose the Sunset for its safe, clean streets, and quality schools. I saw Alan’s passion for immigrant communities firsthand when he invited me to save the Cantonese program at City College,” said Mandy Choi, Chairperson of the Chinese Real Estate Association of America. “Alan Wong truly understands the needs and priorities of the Sunset’s large Asian community.”
“As a longtime resident of District 4, I welcome the mayor’s appointment of Alan Wong as our supervisor. Alan has experience in local government, a strong commitment to public safety, and the ability to listen to our community,” said former San Francisco Sheriff Vicki Hennessy. “He also possesses the integrity, authenticity, and leadership skills to build consensus among his constituents. He will be an asset to District 4 and to the city.”
