Intermediate Power BI

What to know

Prerequisites

Completion of Data Academy’s Intro to Power BI Course is required. This course assumes a good working knowledge of Power BI. Heavy use is made of the query editor and familiarity is assumed. Exceptions are at the discretion of the instructor.

You should have made use of Power BI since taking the Intro to Power BI Course. This course is not designed as a refresher course, but as the next stage in training for advanced Power BI analyst. Attendees out of practice should refresh their memories via an online course or work through the final exercise again from the Intro Class.

You must work with your IT department to ensure Power BI Desktop is installed prior to taking the course.

About this course

This course will give analysts a new set of data eyes allowing them to identify and solve common data structure and data modeling issues.

Duration: 8 hours (two 4 hour sessions)
Location: Offered virtually over Microsoft Teams

What to do

What else should I know about this course?

This course is best suited for users responsible for creating Power BI data models that involve multiple datasets.

This course is the 2nd in DataSF’s series on Power BI. This course will provide a strong foundation in Data Structure and Data Modeling through the tool of Power BI. Analyst tasked with getting multiple data sources to “talk” to each other in Power BI will find this class of use.

While most dashboarding tools, force the user to ‘flatten’ multiple data sources into a single table, Power BI allows for more robust Data Modeling. Instead of making a single table, you establish relationships between many tables. This Data Modeling capability allows for far greater analytical flexibility; allowing you to answer more questions and pose better questions.

However, it is often the case that the data you are using lacks the proper structure for data modeling. You encounter issues like: you have difficulty getting your charts to work, simple calculations seem inexplicably complex, or you are getting weird results. This course will also address how to structure your data for modeling.
