STEP-BY-STEP

Data Academy Enrollment Process

City staff: follow these steps to enroll in a Data Academy class.

Every quarter, Data Academy will post the upcoming course schedule on the Course Calendar.

1

Explore available courses and review course details

If you're interested in taking a class with Data Academy, see our Course Catalog to see all available courses. Each course page includes details about the class and any learning objectives.

  • Review the course details and learning objectives.
  • Check the prerequisites and make sure you qualify for a class.
2

Get supervisor approval

You must have your supervisor's approval before enrolling in a class.

  • Let your supervisors know you are interested in taking a data academy course.
  • No formal evidence of supervisor approval is needed. We just ask you to self-certify that you have received supervisor approval.
3

Fill out a course interest form

Mark the courses you are interested in on our Course Interest Form to be added to our email notification list.

  • To receive an email announcement when a course is offered, you must fill out the interest form and mark that specific course.
  • If you want to update the courses you are interested in, fill out another form. If you want to unsubscribe from emails, reach out to dataacademy@sfgov.org.
4

Fill out enrollment form

We will send email notifications 3 weeks before a schedule class with a link to an enrollment form. After you complete the form, you are placed on a waitlist. Each class has a limited capacity, and we select participants from the waitlist based on the order of form submissions.

  • We offer enrollment on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • You must have supervisor approval for the class prior to filling out the enrollment form.
5

Receive email confirmation of enrollment

2-3 days after the enrollment form is sent out, we will send confirmation emails to those accepted into the class and denial emails to those who were not. Enrollment is not guaranteed as sometimes there are more interested employees than available seats.

  • If you do not accept the class invitation, your spot may be given to someone else. We ask that you confirm your attendance or decline if you are not able to make it.
  • If you are not selected for a class, you will remain on our email list until you successfully enroll in a future class.
  • If you do not receive any follow-up email, it means you submitted the enrollment form after the enrollment process was completed.
  • We ask that you do your best to attend any class you sign up for and avoid allowing conflicts to arise. However, if you must cancel your class reservation, please decline the calendar event.
6

Attend the class

If you are selected to enroll in a class, you must stay for the full scheduled duration and agree to the No-Show Policy terms.

If you do not show up to class after confirming enrollment, you will be considered a No-Show.

7

Fill out the course satisfaction survey

Soon after completing the course, we will send out a survey to obtain feedback on how your learning experience was with Data Academy. We value your input and use it to improve our program for all City employees.

8

Fill out the course impact survey

Three months after each class, we will send out a survey to obtain feedback on how your skills improved as a result of the data academy class you attended.
