Understand which type of mobile food facility (MFF) you have
Mobile food facilities are placed into one of 5 classifications.
There are 5 different types, or "classifications" of mobile food facilities.
Mobile food facility 1 (MFF1)
- Sells prepackaged and nonpotentially hazardous foods
- Example: prepackaged candies, chips, pastries.
Mobile food facility 2 (MFF2)
- Sells prepackaged and potentially hazardous foods
- Example: prepackaged sandwiches, pasta, or cold noodles
Mobile food facility 3 (MFF3)
- Sells non-prepackaged and not potentially hazardous foods
- Example: non-prepackaged churros, salted bagels, cotton candy, or ice shavings
Mobile food facility 4 (MFF4)
- Sells non-prepackaged, potentially hazardous foods, with limited food preparation
- Example: hot dogs, tamales, or coffee
Mobile food facility 5 (MFF5)
- Sells non-prepackaged, potentially hazardous foods, with full food prepping and cooking
- Example: tacos, burritos, falafel, crepes, and curry
Permit-Exemption
A food display area of 25 square feet or less offering only prepackaged nonpotentially hazardous food and whole uncooked produce is exempt from permitting by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. This display must be nonmotorized.
- A cart that sells prepackaged nonpotentially hazardous foods, whole fruits and vegetables.
- Example: prepackaged cookies, chips, candies, canned sodas, whole mangos, whole cabbages, bottled water.
