Program requirements

All volunteer positions are unpaid.

Most volunteers work from 4 to 30 hours a week at City Hall.

該怎麼做

1. See if volunteering is for you

As a volunteer with the SF Board of Supervisors, you will:

  • Learn about local government and politics
  • Gain practical work experience
  • Contribute to your community

Volunteers usually help at the front desk in a Supervisor's office. You'll be helping people who call or come in by referring them to staff across the City, or by contacting other departments for them. Volunteers also respond to people who want to share their ideas, concerns, or opinions on legislation coming before the Board.

You could be asked to:

  • Answer phones, email or mail
  • Update online data
  • Help draft letters or press releases
  • Possibly help the Supervisor or their aides with research

Useful skills

It's useful to have a familiarity with computers, fluency in another language, customer service experience, or have experience working in an office.

Where and when

Most volunteers work:

  • Between 4 and 30 hours a week
  • At City Hall
  • During business hours

All volunteer positions are different, and we encourage you to apply, even if you can't work those hours or have the skills or experience listed.

2. Pick a Supervisor (or more)

Use the planning map to see which Supervisor represents your area. Most Supervisors want volunteers who live in or near their Districts, but you can still apply, even if you don't live in San Francisco.

Research your Supervisor to get an idea of their work and what they focus on in their work. Read their online profile and District website. Many Supervisors post newsletters or list Office Hours in their Districts, which are a good way to find out more about their work. Watch Board meetings live at City Hall or see prior meetings on SF.govTV Channel 26 to get an idea of how the Board works and what's important to a Supervisor.

Every Supervisor's office is different, but they are all looking for volunteers who will to work hard and can represent the Supervisor to the public.

3. Apply to volunteer

On the application, you will need to know:

  • Your choice of Supervisor(s)
  • When you are available
  • Your skills

You can attach your resume or a link to your LinkedIn profile, but it's not required.

Final decisions about hiring are up to the Supervisors's office. They will contact you about your application.
