Mayor Lurie's Statement On Staci Slaughter's Return To Retirement

Office of the Mayor

SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today released the following statement on Chief of Staff Staci Slaughter’s decision to return to retirement:

“When I took office last year, we reimagined the structure of the Mayor’s Office, brought in senior leaders with experience outside government, and built our team around common sense and a commitment to delivering results. Staci Slaughter took our priorities and mapped out the plan. She helped assemble and mentor a team of leaders to implement that plan. And she reset the tone in City Hall, fostering a culture of collaboration that the second floor hadn’t seen in years, to help turn that plan into reality.

“Through it all, she invested the time to give the current and future leaders of our city the tools to succeed and grow. From the youngest Mayor’s Office staff to the most seasoned department heads, so many people across the government have benefitted from her wisdom and mentorship.

“I am no exception. Staci has been an incredible partner and an even better friend. Like so many others, I will continue to benefit from her support in the months and years to come. But thanks to Staci, our team is ready now to seize the opportunities and tackle the challenges our city faces.

“On behalf of a grateful city, thank you, Staci.”

Slaughter has served as Mayor Lurie’s chief of staff since he took office in January 2025. In that time, crime has dropped, the rate of overdose deaths has slowed, and the rate of office vacancy has declined—and San Franciscans’ confidence in the direction of the city has risen dramatically.

She previously retired in 2022 after 26 years with the San Francisco Giants, including as executive vice president and senior advisor to the CEO. Earlier in her career, she served as press secretary to Mayor Frank Jordan.

Slaughter will depart the Mayor’s Office in late June.
