Mayor Lurie Appoints Beya Alcaraz as District Four Supervisor

Experience as Small Business Owner and Teacher Will Help Alcaraz Bring Together Divided Community, Deliver Results for Sunset and Parkside Residents

SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today appointed Isabella “Beya” Alcaraz to fill the vacant District 4 seat on the Board of Supervisors. Alcaraz, age 29, is a lifelong resident of the Sunset, a former small business owner, and an art and music teacher.

“As I’ve spent time listening to families, small business owners, and seniors in the Sunset, I’ve heard the same thing: They want a City Hall that does things with them, not to them—and I couldn’t agree more. The Sunset deserves accountable leadership, someone who knows what this neighborhood is all about and someone who is of the Sunset and works for the Sunset,” said Mayor Lurie. “Beya Alcaraz is a bridge builder and problem solver who cares deeply about this neighborhood. She will bring a fresh perspective to City Hall, and I am honored to appoint her as the next supervisor for District 4.”

“The people of the Sunset deserve to have a say on the issues that impact our lives today and will for years to come. Too many decisions have been made without us, and that changes now,” said District 4 Supervisor Beya Alcaraz. “As your supervisor, I will work to bring all of the District Four residents together to secure the future of the Sunset. I am humbled and honored by Mayor Lurie’s appointment and the opportunity to serve the residents of this great district. I am proud to serve this neighborhood and look forward to working with each and every member of our community.”

Beya Alcaraz is a lifelong resident of the Sunset, a former small business owner, and an art and music teacher. For six years, beginning at age 22, Alcaraz owned and operated The Animal Connection, a beloved neighborhood pet supply store, where she built strong relationships with families and local organizations while creating community programs such as a pet food bank and fire-relief donation drives. She has experienced firsthand the challenges of running a small business in San Francisco, at one point spending $1,000 and waiting six months for approval of an outdoor shed. In 2024, she expanded the business with a second location at the Sunset Mercantile Emporium before selling it in May 2025.

Prior to her appointment, Alcaraz taught art and music to children in the Sunset. Throughout her career, she has been active in her community—volunteering at Holy Name School, coaching youth sports, and performing with local musicians across the Sunset. She was raised in the Sunset, attending Holy Name School and St. Ignatius College Preparatory.

Alcaraz’s parents met at San Francisco State University and settled in the Sunset. They both worked at Holy Name, with her mother serving as parish manager and her father as athletic director. Eventually, they saved enough money to purchase a home in the neighborhood.

A proud first-generation Asian American who shares Chinese heritage, Alcaraz is the first Filipina American to serve on the Board of Supervisors.

“Today’s announcement marks an important milestone for the Sunset District’s diverse communities to come together to advance shared goals,” said Katy Tang, former District 4 Supervisor and Director of Office of Small Business. “Beya’s steadfast commitment to public service, prioritization of residents’ voices, and collaborative approach will drive meaningful progress and long-term improvement across District 4.”

“I am proud to support Beya Alcaraz for District 4 Supervisor. Beya has spent her life in the Sunset and truly understands our community—its families, small businesses, and the diverse cultures that make our neighborhood special,” said Ed Siu, Chairman of Chinatown Merchants United Association of San Francisco (Sunset). “As a former small business owner, Beya knows firsthand the challenges local merchants face and the vital role they play in keeping our neighborhoods strong and vibrant. She listens, brings people together, and focuses on real solutions that strengthen our community. Beya also has deep respect and understanding for the needs and values of our Chinese community here in the Sunset. She has shown a genuine commitment to ensuring our voices are heard and represented at City Hall. I’m confident that as Supervisor, Beya Alcaraz will be a true partner to local residents and businesses, working hard to make the Sunset a better place for everyone.”

“I have been ingrained in the Sunset since I was one year old—growing up, running businesses, and now raising my own kids here,” said Andy Olive, Sunset resident and small business owner. “Beya will bring the kind of leadership this neighborhood deserves. It’s exciting to have someone who grew up here and understands the community representing us, while giving small business owners the voice they need in City Hall. I’m hopeful for the groundwork Beya will lay for our future, and I look forward to her work to support Sunset small businesses and keep our neighborhood a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”
