The San Francisco Arts Commission acknowledges that we are on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone who are the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula. As the indigenous stewards of this land and in accordance with their traditions, the Ramaytush Ohlone have never ceded, lost nor forgotten their responsibilities as the caretakers of this place, as well as for all peoples who reside in their traditional territory. As guests, we recognize that we benefit from living and working on their traditional homeland. We wish to pay our respects by acknowledging the ancestors, elders and relatives of the Ramaytush Community and by affirming their sovereign rights as First Peoples. As a department dedicated to promoting a diverse and equitable Arts and Culture environment in San Francisco, we are committed to supporting the traditional and contemporary evolution of the American Indian community.

Possible Closed Session Regarding Public Employee Appointment/Hiring – the Director of the Arts Commission (Executive Director of Arts and Culture, previously called Director of Cultural Affairs)

Discussion and Possible Action

  1. Public Comment on all matters pertaining to item 2, including public comment on whether to hold item 2(c)in closed session.
  2. Commission will discuss and possibly take action on whether to hold a closed session. (San Francisco Administrative Code Section 67.10(b)).
  3. Commission will discuss and possibly take action on the public employee appointment of the Director of the Arts Commission (Executive Director of Arts and Culture, previously called Director of Cultural Affairs). This item may be held in closed session pursuant to California Government Code Section 54957(b)(1) and San Francisco Administrative Code Section 67.10(b).
  4. Commission may report any actions taken in closed session and will take action on whether to disclose information from closed session, as specified in San Francisco Administrative Code Section 67.12(a), (b).

Proposed mural for façade of The Stud, 1123 Folsom Street

Discussion and possible action

Discussion and possible action to approve “The Toolbox”, a painted mural by Tanya Wischerath. The mural will be painted on the facade of The Stud, located at 1123 Folsom Street, San Francisco, CA and measures H12 ft. by W48 ft. The mural is supported by a Community Challenge Grant and will be maintained by SOMA West Community Benefit District as well as the property owner. The artwork will not become part of the Civic Art Collection.

Arts Impact Endowment Grant

Discussion and possible motion to amend grant number 26AIECH3 to Keli Dailey, (authorized by resolution number 0504-26-082:) to add the fiscal sponsor, Independent Arts and Media; and authorize the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into a grant agreement not to exceed $50,000 at this time.

  7. Motion to approve the Construction Documentation of “From Bridge to Bridge and Our Life in Between,” a mosaic tile artwork by Muzae Sesay, for the San Francisco International Airport, Terminal 3 West, C4C FIS West Art Wall Public Art Project.
  8. Motion to approve “1515 South Van Ness Public Art Project”, a painted and mosaic tile mural project by Precita Eyes Muralists. The mural will be created in five locations: 26th St and South Van Ness (mosaic column on corner); 26th street and South Van Ness (mural); Cesar Chavez and South Van Ness (mural); Shotwell and Caesar Chavez (two mosaic columns). The murals will be maintained by Chinatown Community Development Center. The artwork will not become part of the Civic Art Collection.
  9. Motion to amend Resolution No. 0601-26-107 to update the location to read as: Motion to approve the temporary installation of “Marine Layer” by Miki Iwasaki, that measures H10 ft. by W5.8 ft. by D5.4ft., fabricated from high-strength low-alloy steel sheet, located in Golden Gate Park on the north side of Metson Lake. The artwork will not become part of the Civic Art Collection. The artwork will be maintained by Big Art Loop and will be installed for a period of one year, from date of installation, which is estimated to be June 2026.
  10. Motion to approve the conceptual design proposal “Happiness, Harmony, Community” by Twin Walls Mural Company (Elaine Chu and Marina Perez-Wong) for the Chinatown Public Health Center Renovation Exterior Art Wall, located on the building façade at street level on the corner of Mason and Broadway Streets, as recommended by the Artist Review Panel.
  11. Motion to authorize the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into a design-only contract with Twin Walls Mural Company for an amount not to exceed $20,000 for the design and consultation during fabrication and installation of an artwork for the Chinatown Public Health Center Renovation Exterior Art Wall.

  21. Motion to approve the Final Design and Construction Documents of “You’re Here”, a mosaic tile artwork by Jenifer K Wofford, for the SFO Terminal 3 West Modernization Public Art Project, located at the Arrivals Level in Terminal 3 at San Francisco International Airport.

  23. Motion to approve the temporary installation of “Shrine to Earth (Pillars)” a sculpture by artist Spencer Chang. The sculpture is composed of miscellaneous stone, stainless steel, marine epoxy, NFC chip, that measures H18 in. and W24 in. on a set of three boulders that have a 3-4 ft. diameter each, located at Peacock Meadow in Golden Gate Park. The artwork will be maintained by the artist or a designated representative and will be installed for a period of one year, from date of installation, which is estimated to be September 2026.
  24. Motion to approve the temporary installation of “Beast of Burden” by Walker Babbington, that measures H32 ft. by W12 ft. by L18 ft. fabricated from reclaimed and salvaged lumber, metal, and other reclaimed materials, located in the Chain of Lakes Meadow in Golden Gate Park. The artwork will be maintained by Big Art Loop and will be installed for a period of one year, from date of installation, which is estimated to be January 2027.
  25. Motion to approve the temporary installation of “Bird’s Eye View” by Nicki Adani, that measures H11 ft. 5 in. by W11 ft. by D5 ft. (two total), fabricated from powder coated steel, located at McLaren Park Glen Eagles Overlook. The artwork will be maintained by Big Art Loop and will be installed for a period of one year, from date of installation, which is estimated to be January 2027.
  26. Motion to approve the temporary installation of “Big Apple” by Nicolas Synnott (LeMonde Studio), that measures H11 ft. by W14 ft. by D14 ft. fabricated from steel, located at Balboa Park Fairy Circle. The artwork will be maintained by Big Art Loop and will be installed for a period of one year, from date of installation, which is estimated to be January 2027.

Accessible Meeting Policy 
Per the American Disabilities Act and the Language Access Ordinance, Chinese, Spanish, and/or American Sign Language interpreters will be available upon request. Additionally, every effort will be made to provide a sound enhancement system, meeting materials in alternative formats, and/or a reader. Minutes may be translated after they have been adopted by the Commission. Meeting procedures

  1. Agenda items will normally be heard in order. Please note, that on occasion a special circumstance may necessitate that an agenda item be taken out of order. To ensure that an agenda item is not missed, it is advised to arrive at the beginning of the meeting. All agenda changes will be announced by the Chair at the top of the meeting. 
  2. Public comment will be taken before or during the Committee’s consideration of each agenda item. Each speaker will be allowed to speak for the time allotted by the Chair at the top of the meeting or up to three (3) minutes.  
  3. During General Public Comment, members of the public may address the Commissioners on matters that are within the Arts Commission’s jurisdiction and are not on the agenda. 
  4. Persons who spoke during the public comment period at a meeting of the Arts Commission may supply a brief written summary of the comments to be included in the minutes if it is 150 words or less. The Arts Commission may reject the summary if it exceeds the prescribed word limit or is not an accurate summary of the speaker’s public comment.
  5. Persons unable to attend an Arts Commission meeting may submit correspondence to the Arts Commission in connection with an agenda item. The Commission Secretary will post these documents adjacent to the agenda if they are one page in length. If they are longer than one page, the Arts Commission will make such documents available for public inspection and copying. Please note, correspondence submitted to the Arts Commission will NOT be read aloud during the meeting. Names and addresses included in these submittals will be public. Submittals may be made anonymously. Written comments pertaining to this meeting should be submitted to art-info@sfgov.org.

Public Comment

Public comment in regard to specific agenda items will be taken before or during consideration of the item. Each speaker may speak for up to three minutes per agenda item, unless the Chair has announced a different length of time at the beginning of the meeting. Speakers may not transfer their time to another person. Any person speaking during a public comment period may supply a written summary of their comments to be included in the minutes if it is 150 words or less.
