Know it’s not your fault
No matter what happened, you are not to blame. You deserve support, respect, and justice.
Try to preserve evidence
Don't shower, change clothes, or clean up before a medical exam. If you must change, put the clothes you were wearing in a paper bag.
Call the 24-hour crisis hotline
Contact SF Women Against Rape 24-hour crisis hotline for support and guidance: 415-647-7273.
Seek medical care
Get checked for injuries, sexually transmitted infections, emergency contraception, or request a forensic exam (AKA rape kit). Rape kits don't obligate you to file a police report.
Get seen for free at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Consider filing a report
You can report the assault to the police, but it is not necessary to receive support from us.
If you’re unsure about what you should do, we can help walk you through your options and help you decide.
Seek emotional support
Call a trusted friend, family member, or support service for help, like the 24-hour crisis line. Speaking with a counselor or joining a support group can help.
Healing takes time and you don’t have to go through this alone. We can help you connect to an advocate and other resources.

Help us strengthen the victims’ services system
Our mission is to make government work better for victims and survivors. If you are a survivor or someone working in victim services, share your experience and feedback to help improve the system.Share your experience or feedbackAbout
The Mayor’s Office for Victims’ Rights (MOVR) is an independent department created to enforce and advance the rights of crime victims. Designed to strengthen the system of victim support across San Francisco, we are focused on making sure that government uses its powers to better serve survivors and victims of crime.
The Office of Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) is within MOVR department. SHARP's mandate is to serve as an ombuds office for survivors of sexual assault and/or harassment by receiving complaints from survivors concerning the City's response to allegations of sexual assault and/or harassment. We help survivors navigate the City's systems to resolve complaints about the City's response to allegations and work with stakeholders to identify and develop solutions to improve the overall system of support for survivors.
