DJJ Realignment Subcommittee

The JJCC’s DJJ Realignment Subcommittee has been established under Senate Bill 823, which began the closure of the state’s Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), California’s youth prison system. The subcommittee will realign state functions previously administered by DJJ to county governments. Members of the subcommittee will assist in the development of a comprehensive long-term realignment plan to serve youth at a local level, including the identification of facilities, programming, service needs, and the allocation of grant funding.

Next Meeting: April 15, 2025

When meetings are held, remote public participation is available upon request for individuals who cannot attend in person due to disability. Making a request to participate remotely no later than one (1) hour prior to the start of the meeting helps ensure availability of the meeting link.

About

In 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation to close California's youth prison system: the Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). Each county now has a group of people in charge of developing a local plan to support the needs of young people who were previously eligible for DJJ commitments: young people with sustained charges for the most serious conduct. San Francisco’s DJJ Realignment Subcommittee has 15 members, including 9 community members and youth justice advocates. Two of the members have lived experience in secure juvenile facilities. The Chief Probation Officer of the Juvenile Probation Department chairs the subcommittee.
