A San Francisco for all

The Office of Racial Equity is collaborating with community members and City departments on citywide initiatives to dismantle institutional racism and create a more just city for all San Franciscans.

What's new

These citywide initiatives are alongside the important work that each City department is doing with their racial equity action plans.

Equity Advisory Committee

The EAC is a community advisory committee of the Human Rights Commission. They hold quarterly public meetings and monthly working sessions.

Maternal health disparities

  • Supporting the citywide priority of eliminating racial disparities in pregnancy and postpartum outcomes in San Francisco, including but not limited to Black, Pacific Islander, and American Indian birthing people
  • A collaboration with the Mayor's Office, Department of Public Health, Department of Early Childhood, Homelessness and Supportive Housing, Human Services Agency, and Human Rights Commission
  • Recommendations to be developed with community members, clinicians, and wraparound service providers

Housing and affordability

  • Exploring gaps in access to high-quality, stable, and affordable housing for all in San Francisco, especially issues with City-funded housing

Equity in City contracting

  • Identifying policies or practices that are preventing organizations from competing for City contracts, including but not limited to smaller and/or less-resourced businesses and nonprofits

Citywide Racial Equity Strategy Table

The Strategy Table is a staff advisory committee for the Office of Racial Equity. Their current workstreams include:

City jobs

  • Disciplinary actions: Identifying successful processes to ensure disciplinary actions against City staff are fair, consistent, and non-discriminatory

City services, contracts, and grants

  • Community engagement: Aligning effective community engagement practices across City departments
  • Contacting and grantmaking: Identifying policy discrepancies between City departments that are creating inequities for contracted service providers and grantees
  • Action plans: Developing a list of best practices for equity in City services, contracts, and grants

Board of Supervisors legislation

  • Equity impacts analysis: Reviewing pending ordinances and identifying further data, research, or policy evaluation needed

The Office of Racial Equity defends equal access to City jobs and public services from racial injustice. We provide data analysis, policy guidance, citywide technical assistance, and public trust building.
