20 years of collective impact

Improved food and nutrition security

  • Healthy Retail SF: Shape Up SF’s Bayview HEAL Zone Food Guardians laid the foundation for the citywide healthy retail program. Healthy Retail SF increased access to fresh produce and other nutritious food and beverage options for thousands of San Franciscans, especially in low-income communities.
  • Healthy vending: Support the passage of a healthy vending policy, ensuring access to healthy food and beverages in vending machines on City property.

Increased opportunities for active living

  • Youth PE: PE Advocates raised awareness about the benefits of PE and supported school-aged youth in meeting physical activity guidelines.
  • Safe Routes to School: Launched the Safe Routes to School Program in 2009 to increase safe and accessible walking and bicycling to school.
  • Sunday Streets: Sponsored the launch of Sunday Streets, a program that temporarily transforms city streets into car-free spaces for community-building and movement. Now in its 18th season, it continues to focus on neighborhoods lacking safe open spaces for recreation.

Reduced sugary drink consumption

  • Healthy beverage policies: Helped organizations create healthy beverage policies to make the healthy choice the easy choice.
  • Soda Tax: Laid the groundwork for SF's soda tax by building community awareness of the health impacts of sugary drinks, educating on industry tactics, and partnering with policymakers to introduce sugary drinks legislation.
  • Water access: Expanded access to clean public drinking water via water bottle-filling stations in public spaces and schools.
