Shape Up SF Policy Agenda
2025 Policy Agenda
The Shape Up SF Coalition (Shape Up SF) was formed in 2006 to reduce chronic disease health disparities through primary prevention and environmental strategies, with an emphasis on physical activity and nutrition. Shape Up SF supports the consideration and inclusion of health, equity, poverty reduction, and chronic disease prevention in all city policies and planning processes. Our mission is to advance health equity in San Francisco by collaborating with community partners on system changes that increase nutrition security and active living. To achieve its mission, Shape Up SF has identified the following policy priorities.Improve nutrition security and water access
- Ensure children have nutrition security year-round by maximizing school and child care program participation in state and federal nutrition programs.
- Increase access to nutrient-dense, culturally-valued foods for vulnerable populations.
- Increase funding and incentives for healthy food access programs that establish an environment for people to feed themselves with dignity.
- Increase access to and trust in drinking water in public spaces and schools.
- Support centralizing food coordination with community input and data-driven decisions to create a more inclusive, resilient, and equitable food system for all residents.
- Support policies that reduce the consumption of sugary food and drinks.
- Update city nutrition standards to align with federal guidelines.
Ensure equitable access to opportunities for recreation and safe transportation
- Support equitable funding and investments in complete streets and safe spaces for active living.
- Explicitly prioritize marginalized residents by including community members in planning processes.
- Promote bike- and pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, including the adoption of specific design guidelines (e.g. traffic calming, bike lanes, tree canopy, private developer compliance, etc.) that support active transportation.
- Include oversight and performance measures that account for equity.
- Support equitable distribution of funding, resources, and increased access to public transportation.
Support sustainable funding for prevention and wellness
- Increase funding streams for chronic disease prevention and improved social determinants of health.
- Increase the soda tax. The soda tax ensures sustainable funding for programs that benefit populations targeted by the beverage industry and disproportionately impacted by chronic disease.
- Extend the Sugary Drink Distributor Tax Advisory Committee (SDDTAC) - the SDDTAC provides annual recommendations to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors through a transparent and data-driven process that encourages input and participation from impacted communities.
