2026 Policy Agenda
The Shape Up SF Coalition (Shape Up SF) was formed in 2006 to reduce chronic disease health disparities through primary prevention and environmental strategies, with an emphasis on physical activity and nutrition. Shape Up SF also supports the consideration and inclusion of health, equity, poverty reduction, and chronic disease prevention in all city policies and planning processes. Shape Up SF’s mission is to advance health equity in San Francisco by collaborating with community partners on system changes that increase nutrition security and active living. To achieve its mission, Shape Up SF has identified the following policy priorities.Improve nutrition security and water access
- Maximize participation in federal/local nutrition programs and strengthen nutrition and wellness policies to increase access to healthy environments that support children and youth’s nutrition security year-round.
- Increase access to nutrient-dense, culturally valued foods for neighborhoods and populations disproportionately affected by chronic disease.
- Increase access to and trust in drinking water in public spaces and schools.
- Support policies that reduce the consumption of sugary food and drinks.
- Support centralizing food coordination with community input and data-driven decisions to create a more inclusive, resilient, and equitable food system for all San Franciscans.
Ensure equitable access to opportunities for safe, joyful movement
- Support equitable funding and investments in complete streets and safe spaces for active living.
- Explicitly prioritize marginalized residents by including community members in planning processes.
- Promote bike- and pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, including the adoption of specific design guidelines (e.g. traffic calming, bike lanes, tree canopy, private developer compliance, etc.) that support active transportation.
- Include oversight and performance measures that account for equity.
- Support equitable distribution of funding, resources, and increased access to public transportation.
Increase and protect sustainable funding for chronic disease prevention
- Increase funding streams for chronic disease prevention and improved social determinants of health.
- Support a dedicated, increased Sugary Drink Distributor Tax (SDDT) to fund prevention programs that directly address health inequities, benefiting populations targeted by the beverage industry and disproportionately impacted by chronic disease.
- Support the extension of the Sugary Drink Distributor Tax Advisory Committee and the adoption of their annual recommendations to ensure a transparent, data-driven, and community-informed allocation of the SDDT revenue.
