Dear Customers,
Over the next several weeks, San Francisco will roll out new digital permitting services.
This is just the beginning of a long-term plan to deliver a better customer experience.
Over the next couple years, we will transition all permits into one unified, digital application system: PermitSF.
February 13, 2026
The following permit applications will be online on the PermitSF portal:
- Door, window, and siding in-kind replacement
- Special event pre-application, to centralize multi-departmental permits in one place
- Fire alarms
- Automated Extinguishing Systems (AES), including fire sprinklers
You will apply for these permits digitally and no longer in-person at the Permit Center (49 South Van Ness, 2nd Floor).
We aim to approve complete applications within two business days. We will issue your permit once it’s approved and paid for.
All other permit types and processes remain unchanged.
Benefits of digital permitting
Apply online, anytime
No more trips to the Permit Center unless you want help. Apply from your desk, work site, phone, or anywhere with an internet connection.
Real-time transparency
Track your permit status live. See staff comments instantly. No more chasing updates through email or phone calls.
No more printing plans
Uploading initial plans and revisions is faster and cheaper.
Schedule inspections
Schedule and track your inspections from one place.
How will it work
To apply for permits, you will create a free account.
Creating an account takes less than 5 minutes with an email address.
You can create an account starting on February 9.
Your contact information will then autofill in any permits you apply for in the new systems.
You will have the option to pay for your permits digitally.
