NextGen Public Safety Cohort

This paid program teaches you about the different jobs in the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD). You will learn what the Police Academy is like and build skills that can help you start a career in public safety.Sign up to get notified when the application opens.

About us

This program is run by SFPD, the Department of Human Resources, and City College of San Francisco. It also receives support from Crankstart and the Opportunities For All program.

Why join?

The cohort offers a paid opportunity to:

  • Explore careers in public safety and learn what it takes to become a Police Officer in San Francisco
  • Hear from officers and learn about different roles within SFPD
  • Build skills through interactive workshops designed to support career success
  • Gain exposure to Police Academy training and the steps in the application process

Program eligiblity

Applicants must:

  • Live OR go to school in San Francisco
  • Be ages 19–24
  • Commit to attending the program 20 hours per week in person for 6 weeks

Participants chosen for the NextGen Public Safety Cohort will be hired through the Opportunities For All (OFA) internship program. OFA gives San Francisco youth and young adults a chance to explore careers and build job skills through paid internships, mentors, and pathways to future employment.

Program details

  • Application opens: March 9, 2026
  • Application closes: April 3, 2026
  • Program dates: June 22 - July 30, 2026
  • Program hours: 1 PM - 5 PM daily during the 6 week internship
  • Schedule: 20 hours/week, in-person
  • Pay: $19.18/hour | $19.61/hour (effective July 1, 2026)
  • Location: In person in San Francisco

How to apply

  • Submit application between March 9 - April 3, 2026
  • Participate in 1-2 interview(s) in April 2026
  • Receive conditional offer email in May 2026, if you are selected as a finalist
  • Complete required background checks in May 2026. (Finalists must pass background checks before they can be hired.)
  • Complete hiring paperwork with Opportunities for All by June 2026. (Interns are hired through OFA's partner agency, JCYC.)
