Respiratory virus hospitalizations
Respiratory virus hospital admissions in San Francisco hospitals.

Respiratory virus hospital admissions
Hospital admissions are an important indicator of the severity of viruses in San Francisco. We report on hospital admissions for:
- COVID-19
- Influenza (flu)
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
Each card on this dashboard shows the current virus activity level and whether hospital admissions are increasing, decreasing, or staying about the same.

Data notes and sources
This dataset includes respiratory virus (COVID-19, influenza, RSV) admissions to San Francisco hospitals. Data includes the count of admissions per virus per week. The data are provided by the National Healthcare Security Network (NHSN).
We receive NHSN data directly from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) for these hospitals:
- Chinese Community Hospital
- Kaiser Hospital
- Kentfield San Francisco
- Laguna Honda Hospital
- San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SFVAMC)
- Sutter (California Pacific Medical Center) hospitals (Davies, Mission Bernal, and Van Ness campuses)
- University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) hospitals (Hyde, Mission Bay, Mount Zion, Parnassus, Stanyan)
- Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital
Kentfield and Laguna Honda aren’t full hospitals, but they do have a few beds for hospital-level care.
Activity levels range from very low to very high. They are based on the number of hospital admissions per 100,000 people. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) created these levels using data from the past 5 respiratory virus seasons.
The ranges are different for each virus:
- COVID-19: Very Low <2, Low 2-11, Moderate 11-20, High 20-28, Very High >28.
- Influenza: Very Low <1, Low 1-4, Moderate 4-7, High 7-9, Very High>9.
- RSV: Very Low <0.6, Low 0.6-1.1, Moderate 1.1-1.6, High 1.6-2.1, Very High >2.1.
Trend shows whether the hospitalization has changed from the previous week.
A change must be large enough to count as increasing or decreasing:
- COVID-19: a change of 0.3 or more hospital admissions per 100,000 people
- Influenza: a change of 0.25 or more per 100,000 people
- RSV: a change of 0.2 or more per 100,000 people
Smaller changes are labeled stable. These cutoffs are based on a CDC method and adjusted using past San Francisco data.
You can find statewide respiratory virus data in the CDPH report.

Admission rate per 100,000 is calculated by multiplying the count of admissions each week by 100,000 and dividing by San Francisco population estimate. The data received from NHSN is aggregate and does not include person-level details. The rates reported are estimates as some new admissions may not be San Francisco residents.
