For Immediate Release
SAN FRANCISCO, Friday, May 1, 2026 – This week, the United States Postal Service will begin delivering more than 500,000 vote-by-mail ballots packets prepared by the Department of Elections for local voters. Each packet includes a two-card ballot, a postage-paid return envelope, and voting instructions.

"Voting by mail is secure and dependable," said Director John Arntz. “We prioritize ballot security at every step and provide ballot tracking so voters can follow their ballot from return to counting. With flexible return options—by mail, at the City Hall Voting Center, at one of our 37 drop boxes, or at any of the 501 polling places on Election Day—participating is simple and accessible. We encourage all eligible voters to take part and make their voices heard in the June 2 election.”

To facilitate ballot return, on Monday, May 4, the Department will open 37 ballot drop-off boxes across the City. These boxes will be available 24 hours a day until 8 p.m. on Election Night. Ballot drop-off box locations are available at sfelections.gov/ballotdropoff.

Also on May 4, the Department will launch the Accessible Vote-by-Mail (AVBM) Portal at sfelections.gov/access. This portal allows any voter to download and mark their ballot using a screen reader, head pointer, sip-and-puff device, or other assistive technology. Completed ballots must then be printed and returned either by mail or in person.

Voters can track their ballot throughout the process—from assembly and mailing to signature verification and counting— by navigating to the “Track My Ballot” tab at sfelections.gov/voterportal. Voters may also sign up to receive updates via text (SMS), email, or voicemail by visiting WheresMyBallot.sos.ca.gov.

Voters who do not receive their ballot packet by May 8 are advised to contact the Department by calling (415) 558-6100, emailing sfvote@sfgov.org, or submitting a request through the “Request a Replacement Ballot” tab at sfelections.gov/voterportal. Replacement ballots are also available in person at the City Hall Voting Center.

The Department of Elections is committed to ensuring that every voter has the support needed to participate in the upcoming election. Information about voting options, accessible services, and language assistance is available at sfelections.gov or by phone at (415) 558-6100.
