Mayor Lurie's Statement on Board of Supervisors Budget and Appropriations Committee Unanimous Vote in Support of City Budget
SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today issued the following statement after the Board of Supervisors Budget and Appropriations Committee voted unanimously to advance the city budget:
“When I took office in January, I inherited a city with so much potential and an historic $800 million budget deficit that was holding us back. My team got to work, and in just a few months, we worked with the Board of Supervisors and partners across the city to deliver a proposed budget that tackled that deficit head-on and prioritized core services like public safety and clean streets to drive San Francisco’s comeback. After another productive month of work with Board President Rafael Mandelman, Budget Chair Connie Chan, and so many other critical partners, I am confident that this final budget answers San Franciscans’ call for us to rebuild a safer, cleaner, thriving city.
“This budget takes major strides to lay the foundation for our long-term growth—bringing spending closer in line with revenues so we don’t spend money we don’t have, while focusing our resources on providing safe and clean streets, addressing the fentanyl crisis, and advancing our economic recovery. We made common-sense decisions to dedicate dollars sitting unspent to advance our urgent work addressing the behavioral health and homelessness crisis on our streets. And even facing an historic deficit, we protected essential programs and resources to support our immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities while responsibly setting aside resources to prepare us for whatever may come our way at the federal and state levels.
“Passing this budget also required painful decisions that were, unfortunately, necessary to set up our entire city for success. Leadership means making those tough decisions, and this group of city leaders did that. As a result, the city controller found that we reversed a decade-long trend of increasing the number of positions in government and that we are saving as much as $300 million every year in future budgets.
“I am grateful to President Mandelman, Supervisor Chan, and the entire Board of Supervisors for their partnership through this process. San Franciscans voted for a new spirit of collaboration in City Hall, and that spirit is alive and well.
“We will continue to work together to deliver the results San Franciscans expect with the accountability they deserve as we address the challenges facing our city and lay the foundation for this recovery and a new level of prosperity that will benefit generations of San Franciscans to come.”
