Signed in Shanghai, Memorandum of Understanding Will Establish Framework for Collaboration on Joint Exhibits, Research, Educational Programs; Strengthens San Francisco’s Standing as City of Innovation as Part of Mayor Lurie’s Work Accelerate Economic Comeback

SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today celebrated the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the California Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Science and Technology Museum on his first international trip as mayor to Shanghai and Seoul. The MOU establishes a framework for the museums to collaborate on joint exhibitions, research initiatives, educational programs, and staff exchanges, strengthening scientific and educational collaboration between the institutions. The partnership reinforces a shared commitment to advancing scientific discovery, sustainability, and cultural exchange.

Signed in Shanghai, the MOU builds on Mayor Lurie’s work to maintain San Francisco’s status as a global leader in innovation and scientific discovery while continuing to drive the city’s economic comeback. This week, San Francisco will celebrate Climate Week—bringing together more than 60,000 people for 700 events citywide and showcasing the city’s climate innovation leadership. To continue to drive the city’s economic comeback, the mayor has taken steps to strengthen city arts and culture institutions, partnered with the private and philanthropic sectors to contribute to downtown’s recovery, and launched a plan to accelerate the city’s economic comeback.

“Global partnerships are critical to advancing science and innovation in San Francisco,” said Mayor Lurie. “By connecting the California Academy of Sciences and the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum, we are strengthening scientific knowledge, expanding access to educational opportunities, and building a brighter future for the young people of both cities.”

The signing marks a second milestone in Mayor Lurie’s trip to China and South Korea to strengthen San Francisco’s sister city relationships with Shanghai and Seoul, deepen arts and culture partnerships, and promote tourism to San Francisco.
