Dear Customers,
Today, we’re announcing a new citywide addressing process that is faster, more transparent and easier for property owners.
The new process covers the entire lifecycle of a building from project approval to parcel creation to address assignment and removal, and has been formalized in DBI Information Sheet A-01, available on our website. The information sheet lays out each step an applicant needs to take, and the roles and responsibilities of the each City department involved along the way.
One of the biggest changes is that we now require a building permit and an address request form for all address requests, instead of an “M” permit as in the past. If you are planning construction, you will submit this form with your building permit application. If you just need an address and aren’t planning any construction, you will just submit the form and DBI staff will complete the building permit on your behalf.
We quietly launched the new process last June so we could test it and refine it as needed.
The “soft launch” was extremely successful! We cut the time it takes to assign an address by more than half. It took us less than five days to assign an address in July, August and September compared to 13 days in April and May.
For more information or to request a new address, visit our new building addressing step-by-step webpage at sf.gov/building-address.
As always, please send any feedback to dbi.communications@sfgov.org.
Thank you for your support and partnership. Stay safe.
