SFVoices

SF Voices is an initiative to engage with San Franciscans, gathering data to better serve our community.

Background

The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is committed to protecting and promoting the health of all San Franciscans. As part of the central administration at SFDPH, the Office of Health Equity (OHE) ensures that all SFDPH activities prioritize equity through authentic community engagement and input in health services decisions. We envision inclusive involvement with San Franciscans and aim to consistently align with community concerns. We believe that communities know their needs and solutions best. In 2024-2025, OHE will launch SF Voices, a community-based survey platform providing San Franciscans, particularly those not often heard at community meetings, a streamlined way to share their voice.

Purpose

SF Voices aims to establish an ongoing dialogue between residents, non-profit/local organizations, and the health department in San Francisco. With a population of over 850,000 residents and 11 distinct districts, creating a streamlined communication channel is crucial for gaining valuable insights from the people we serve. SF Voices will collect information from San Franciscans and utilize this data to enhance existing programs and shape future initiatives. This platform can be utilized to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Gather emerging recommendations from community members and thought leaders.
  2. Receive feedback on current or proposed community health services.
  3. Foster collaboration between the community and SFDPH on health issues.
  4. Understand the community’s unique assets and areas of opportunity.
  5. Utilize data and lived experiences to advocate to policy and decision-makers.

Project Scope

SF Voices is creating a database of San Francisco residents who will complete a limited number of SFDPH surveys and be compensated for their expertise. The surveys will be distributed through various outreach tools at local community events. Targeted recruitment strategies will be used to gather information for specific needs. The surveys will remain anonymous and will be available in multiple languages. No PHI data will be collected for this project. Our three-step process for gathering survey data involves creating an action plan, sending the survey to targeted groups, and analyzing the results.

A publicly available report will be shared on the SFDPH website, and participants will be able to view the report by visiting this page.

Survey Details

The SF Voices Pilot survey comprises 18 questions and will take about 5 to 10 minutes to complete. It will address four main areas: Housing, Social & Economic Status, Neighborhood Assets, Mental & Physical Health.

Project Implementation

The project will be implemented in three (3) phases.

Phase One: The Pilot

  • Target Audience – 100 participants
  • Survey Distribution modalities: Qualtrics offline survey application using iPads.
  • Gift Card Distribution: Participants will receive a gift card for their participation.

Phase Two

  • Target Audience – 2,500 participants.
  • Survey Distribution Modalities: Most efficient ones from pilot results.
  • Gift Card Distribution: Participants will receive a gift card for their participation.

Phase Three

  • Target Audience – 5,000 participants
  • Survey Distribution Modalities: Most efficient model(s) from phases one and two.
  • Gift Card Distribution: Participants will receive a gift card for their participation.
