Close your business

If you are no longer in business in San Francisco, you will need to close your business registration as well as any permits or licenses. Notify and pay final wages to employees in accordance with labor laws.

Cancel your San Francisco business registration

Log in to cancel your Business Registration and pay any delinquent taxes or outstanding balances on the account.

Abandon your Fictitious Business Name

If you have filed for a fictitious business name for your business within the last 5 years, you will need to file for an abandonment.

Request Closure of an existing Business Personal Property account (if applicable)

If you have been reporting and filing Unsecured Business Personal Property Taxes for your business, you must notify the Office of the Assessor-Recorder and file your final Business Personal Property Tax.

Cancel any permits and licenses

You should cancel any and all permits and licenses you have.


Common permits

Health Permits

Complete a business closure form with the Department of Public Health.

Call 415-252-3800 with questions.

You can find your health permit number on your Unified License Bill from the Office of the Treasurer and Tax Collector.

Seller's Permit

Fill out and mail the CDTFA-65 form to the CA Department of Tax & Fee Administration. You can also read Publication 74 for more information.

Weights and Measures

Complete a business closure form with the Department of Public Health.

Liquor License

Fire Department Permit

Contact SF Fire Department at 628-652-3260.

Shared Space

Fill our a removal form to tell us that you removed your parklet. Read the instructions and complete the form.

Street Vendor Permit

Email streetvendorpermit@sfdpw.org and let them know that you want to close out your vending permit.

Include the permit number, your name, and the business name in the email.

Close your LLC/Corporation (if applicable)

If you are closing an LLC or Corporation, you'll need to close it with the state of California.

For your employees

  • Provide your employees with information about how to claim Unemployment Insurance Benefits
  • Pay your final state payroll taxes.
    To submit your payroll taxes, file a Payroll Tax Deposit and Quarterly Contribution Return and Report of Wages along with payment to the CA Employment Development Department (EDD) within ten days of closing your business.

Close all private business accounts

This may include bank accounts, credit card, insurance, vendor accounts, or others.
