Citywide Network Modernization

The Department of Technology is modernizing the City and County of San Francisco's network technology. These upgrades lower costs, improve resilience, and maintain security.

The three R's: resiliency, remediation, and recovery.

The problem

The City and County of San Francisco serves hundreds of thousands of residents. Its systems must remain online and functional at all times, even in the case of an emergency.

Without upgrading to new, modern technology, our network will grow more complex and expensive. At the same time, it becomes more vulnerable to failure. A critical failure at City Hall in 2021 highlighted the pressing need for these upgrades.

The process

In mid 2021, the Department of Technology spent several months assessing the network and the needs of dozens of partner agencies and departments.

The result of that work was a thorough plan for migrating almost all City departments to our new, modernized network.

Project status

As of November 2022, over half of all planned migrations have been completed.

In 2022 alone, an average of 3 site migrations were completed each month.

The Department of Technology plans to continue migrations until all departments are on a secure, resilient, and highly available network.
