Get a permit to open a laundromat or laundry

Effective September 1 ,2025, Veterinary Hospitals and Laundromat Facilities are exempt from obtaining a San Francisco Public Health (DPH)

What to know

Here’s what this means for you:

  • You will no longer receive a license bill for your health permit. Please note that other city licenses and registrations may still be required.
  • All outstanding balances remain payable to the San Francisco’s Tax Collector’s Office.
  • Routine DPH inspections of your facility will cease.
  • If you are in the permitting process, your application will be inactivated. Please note that any application fees paid will not be refunded. However, any unused plan check fees will be
    refunded.
  • SFDPH may still inspect your facility in response to public complaints.
  • Permits and certificates of registration associated with San Francisco Health Code Article 21, 22, and 25 are still required for your business as applicable. This includes but is not limited, permits for the storage and use of hazardous materials, the generation and/or treatment of hazardous and medical waste, and the operation of aboveground or underground storage tanks (USTs).
  • Certificates of registration associated with the San Francisco Administration Code Chapter115 and Section 1.13-5 are still required for your business as applicable. This includes but is not limited to registration of point of sale, weighing, and measuring devices.

This ordinance is part of a broader effort to streamline processes and reduce unnecessary administrative requirements for businesses in San Francisco.
