District 1
San Francisco’s District 1, which includes the Richmond neighborhood, is hosting three Summer Learning Week events.Community Youth Center of San Francisco: STEAM Academy
STEAM Dreams: vol. 94118: Students at STEAM Academy will explore the history and community of the Richmond neighborhood to develop the knowledge and compassion needed to engage thoughtfully in their everyday lives. By learning about their neighbors and listening to diverse perspectives on the neighborhood’s impact, students will gain a deeper understanding that a sense of belonging spans generations. In partnership with the Richmond Library Branch, students will engage community members through three guiding questions: How long have you lived in the Richmond? What is your favorite thing to do in this neighborhood? What does community mean to you? Through these conversations, students will collect stories of the past, present, and future and use them to create a short film that highlights their neighbors and celebrates the rich fabric of the Richmond neighborhood. The Richmond Neighborhood Center: Epic STEAM Summer Camp!
Creative Critters: We Belong Art Showcase: As part of the “Creative Critters” camp theme, students will explore a variety of art forms including painting, drawing, and mixed media to design imaginative “critters” that represent their identities, cultures, and interests. Through this creative process, students will connect their artwork to themes of belonging, community, and self-expression. Students will also create additional pieces inspired by their families and communities, with opportunities to incorporate MCAP themes of culture and identity. The week will culminate in a Community Day Showcase, where families, caregivers, and school staff are invited to view student art displays, booths, and storytelling. Students will also contribute to a “Community Appreciation Wall” to share messages of gratitude and connection. This event strengthens community connection by centering student voice, celebrating creativity, and bringing families and school communities together in a shared space of learning, leadership, and belonging. The Richmond Neighborhood Center: Beacon Pathways at Presidio Middle School
Leading with Care: Stories that Bring Us Together: Our outgoing 8th-grade students will participate in a special cross-age literacy event by walking to Lafayette Elementary School to read aloud to K–5th grade students. This meaningful experience allows middle schoolers to step into leadership roles as mentors and role models, while fostering a love of reading among younger students. This event strongly aligns with our Learn, Lead, Belong values. Learn: Both our 8th graders and elementary students benefit academically—older students build communication and comprehension skills, while younger students strengthen their literacy through engaging read-alouds. Lead: Our 8th graders take initiative as leaders by guiding reading sessions, demonstrating responsibility, and setting a positive example for younger peers. Belong: By connecting across schools and grade levels, students build relationships and a sense of community, reinforcing that everyone is part of a supportive and inclusive learning environment. This experience will celebrate our students’ growth and gives our 8th graders a chance to leave a lasting, positive impact as they prepare to move on to high school. Photos coming soon!
