

Take PEP if you were exposed to HIV in the past 72 hours
PEP means taking medication after sex or sharing needles to prevent getting HIV. You must start PEP within 72 hours. Call City Clinic for help: 628-217-6692.Eligibility
- We can prescribe PEP to people with many kinds of insurance, or no insurance.
- If you have Kaiser or Veterans Administration (VA) insurance, we cannot prescribe you PEP. You must get it through them.
Cost
- Health insurance covers PEP medication. We can help you get a coupon that covers copays.
- If you have no insurance and meet income requirements, you may receive PEP medication for free.
What to expect at your visit
- We will evaluate if PEP is right for you, give you counseling, and test you for HIV and other STIs.
- If we recommend you take PEP, we will give you a 2-day supply of PEP medication to start right away. We will also send a prescription to a pharmacy for the remaining doses.

City Clinic is closed nights, weekends, and holidays. After hours, go to the nearest hospital’s urgent care clinic or emergency room.
How PEP works
PEP means taking medication after sex or sharing needles to prevent getting HIV. You must start PEP within 72 hours after sex or sharing a needle.
PEP usually involves taking 1 pill per day for 28 days. Sometimes your provider may recommend a different pill schedule instead.

Do you need PEP
You may need PEP if:
- You had the type of sex where a penis goes inside an anus or a vagina/front-hole, without a condom and without taking PrEP.
- You shared a needle.
You do not need PEP if:
- You used a condom the whole time during sex, and the condom did not break.
- You took PrEP before the exposure to HIV, and you keep taking PrEP afterward.
- You know for certain that the person you had sex with or shared needles with does not have HIV.
- You know for certain that the person you had sex with is living with HIV and has had an undetectable viral load for 6 months or more while taking HIV medication.
- You had oral sex only.
- You had a lap dance, fingering, a hand job, or any other kind of touch other than a penis going inside an anus or a vagina/front-hole.
