The below listed summary of seats, term expirations and membership information shall serve as notice of vacancies, upcoming term expirations, and information on currently held seats, appointed by the Board of Supervisors. Appointments by other bodies are listed, if available.
Seat numbers listed as “VACANT” are open for immediate appointment. However, you are able to submit applications for all seats and your application will be maintained for one year, in the event that an unexpected vacancy or opening occurs.

Applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be contacted by the Rules Committee Clerk once the Rules Committee Chair determines the date of the hearing. Members of the Rules Committee will consider the appointment(s) at the meeting and applicant(s) may be asked to state their qualifications. The appointment of the individual(s) who is recommended by the Rules Committee will be forwarded to the Board of Supervisors for final approval.
Description:
The Public Works Commission shall consist of five seats:
- Two appointments by the Board of Supervisors
- Seat 1 and 5 appointed by the Board of Supervisors.
- Two appointments by the Mayor, subject to confirmation by the Board of Supervisors
- Seat 2 appointed by the Mayor subject to confirmation by the Board of Supervisors.
- Seat 4 appointed by the Mayor subject to confirmation by the Board of Supervisor.
- One appointed by the Controller subject to confirmation by the Board of Supervisors
- Seat 3 appointed by the Controller subject to confirmation by the Board of Supervisors.
Qualifications for commissioners that are desirable, but not required, include a background or experience in cleaning and maintaining public spaces, urban forestry, urban design, construction, skilled crafts and trades, finance and audits, architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, or performance measurement and management.
Each member shall serve a term of four years. However, seats 1, 3 and 5 shall serve an initial term of two years.
The Commission shall exercise all the powers and duties of boards and commissions set forth in Sections 4.102, 4.103, and 4.104, except for the authority conferred on the Sanitation and Streets Commission in Section 4.139, and may take other actions as prescribed by ordinance.
Holdover Information:
Holdover tenure of commissioners is limited to 60 days after their terms expire. (Charter § 4.101.5.)
