Mayor Lurie Statement on Announcement of Retirement of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi
SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today released the following statement on Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s announcement of retirement:
“For decades, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi has represented San Francisco with a relentless commitment to the people she serves and the city she loves.
“In 1987, Speaker Pelosi stepped up to serve our city in the House of Representatives. Through her decades of service, Speaker Emerita Pelosi became a trailblazer—as the first female Speaker of the House and a tireless advocate for San Francisco. Through her grit, determination, and compassion, she has made our city proud as the greatest Speaker our nation has ever seen.
“Her leadership has delivered historic progress for our city—strengthening our infrastructure, supporting our public spaces by transforming the Presidio into a national park, championing healthcare for kids and families in San Francisco and across our nation, and standing up for our city’s LGBTQ+ community.
“While her work brought her to the highest levels of leadership, Speaker Emerita Pelosi never forgot who she served: San Franciscans. Her service has strengthened San Francisco, inspired generations of Americans, and motivated all of us to continue working for the city we love.
“In college, I had the opportunity to intern in Speaker Emerita Pelosi’s office. I’ve been fortunate to benefit from her mentorship and guidance, especially now as mayor, and she has played that role for so many future leaders in our city. Speaker Emerita Pelosi, thank you for your years of leadership and friendship, and for your service to our city and our country.”
