Mayor Lurie Cuts Ribbon on 148 New Affordable Homes for First-Time Homeowners in Mission Bay
Builds on Mayor Lurie’s Work to Make San Francisco Affordable for Future Generations, Add Housing Across City
SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today cut the ribbon on the 400 China Basin Condominiums, a 100% affordable housing development in Mission Bay. Developed in partnership with San Francisco Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII) and other key partners, the new community will add 148 family units of affordable housing for first-time homeowners and is part of a broader OCII initiative to create approximately 2,500 affordable homes in Mission Bay.
Mayor Lurie has taken steps to build housing across the city and make San Francisco more affordable. Just yesterday, the mayor cut the ribbon to deliver 73 units of new, 100% affordable housing in Hunters Point Shipyard, and earlier this month, he cut the ribbon on a 135-unit 100% affordable housing development in the Outer Sunset that prioritizes San Francisco Unified School District educators and staff, adding more housing for working families. Earlier this year, he announced his Family Zoning plan to create more housing and ensure that the next generation of San Franciscans can afford to raise their families in the city.
“Too many families and young people are wondering if they’ll be able to stay in the city they call home. These new homes are for them—for people who want to raise children, put down roots, and stay in San Francisco,” said Mayor Lurie. “400 China Basin puts 148 homes and the dream of homeownership within reach for San Francisco’s working families and takes another step to solve San Francisco’s housing shortage.”
The project delivers ownership opportunities for moderate-income households earning between 80% and 110% of the area median income. 400 China Basin offers one-, two-, and three-bedroom condominiums designed for families and individuals looking to build long-term stability in San Francisco. Amenities include a rooftop deck with 360-degree views of the bay, a landscaped courtyard, community room with kitchen, bike and teen room, yoga room, dog-washing station, and onsite parking.
“This project is an incredible opportunity to stabilize families and working people in our city, and it showcases our San Francisco values of equity, community, and inclusion,” said District 6 Supervisor Matt Dorsey. “I’m excited to welcome new residents to this thriving 21st-century neighborhood that embraces socioeconomic diversity.”
“400 China Basin is a monumental step toward creating an inclusive and thriving mixed-income neighborhood in Mission Bay. Mayor Lurie often says the city is on the rise, and we see that sentiment embodied in this project,” said OCII Executive Director Thor Kaslofsky. “At OCII, we're committed to ensuring that everyone has access to high quality housing and the opportunity to succeed.”
“400 China Basin represents an unparalleled opportunity for low- and moderate-income San Franciscans to own a home in a privileged waterfront location. What an amazing luxury for some new homeowners to go to bed looking at the sparkling Bay Bridge and wake up to the sun rising over the Bay. As developers, we are grateful for the opportunity to be part of creating a new community that represents the diverse fabric, which makes San Francisco such a dynamic place to live,” said Michael Simmons, Michael Simmons Property Development, Inc. President. “We could never have done this project without the support of the city. Having the Mayor attend the grand opening, only demonstrated his commitment to providing affordable housing for all San Franciscans.”
“This was the most fun and energy-filled grand openings I have ever attended. The spirit in the room that this is a special development was palpable,” said Charmain Curtis, Curtis Development Principal. “A racially and ethnically diverse group of people gathered to celebrate not just the beautiful building and its amazing views, but the rare and exciting opportunity it offers for middle-income first-time homebuyers to own a market rate quality home on San Francisco’s waterfront. 400 China Basin Condominiums elevates the idea of what affordable housing can be.”
