Mayor Lurie Breaks Ground on 7,200 Long-Awaited New Homes at Former Candlestick Park Site

SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today broke ground on a new waterfront community development at the former Candlestick Park stadium site that will deliver 7,200 homes in the Bayview, including more than 300 affordable units in the first phase alone, kicking off construction after years of delays. At full build-out, Candlestick will span approximately 270 acres and include a 2.8-million-square-foot innovation district that will establish a center of economic activity in southeastern San Francisco.

The long-delayed start of construction continues Mayor Lurie’s work under his Family Opportunity Agenda to make San Francisco more welcoming for families. Through Mayor Lurie’s Family Zoning plan, a major investment proposed for affordable housing, and other key measures, the city is driving new housing creation so San Franciscans can afford to raise their kids here. Through PermitSF, the city is also speeding up the permitting process to get housing built more quickly. In recent months, Mayor Lurie has opened new affordable homes across San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point, Mission, Hayes Valley, and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods while breaking ground on 100% affordable artist housing on Market Street at the end of July. Last week, he also took steps to keep San Francisco renters in their homes right now, supporting legislation that will protect renters from being evicted if they fall behind by less than one month of rent.

“For years, San Franciscans have heard about the potential for Candlestick. Today, I am proud that we are finally breaking ground and taking the first step toward 7,200 new homes for San Franciscans,” said Mayor Lurie. “Early in my administration, I came to this site with the leaders of 12 city departments to ask how we can go faster. As we prepare to turn this long-vacant land into a new neighborhood that will begin welcoming families again, we will keep pushing to move construction faster, bring homes online sooner, and make sure the surrounding community benefits at every stage. Plans for the new 270-acre bayfront neighborhood, developed by FivePoint, include:

• 7,200 new homes, including approximately 700 in the first phase, nearly half of which will be affordable
• An innovation district with up to 2.8 million square feet of flexible commercial space  
• 2.5 miles of publicly accessible bay waterfront
• 60 city blocks of new development
• 100 acres of parks and open space
• Shops, restaurants, a hotel, and entertainment uses

The first phase of development will span seven city blocks and include approximately 700 homes, 314 of them affordable, along with early stages of the innovation district and ground-floor retail and restaurants. All of this will be supported by foundational infrastructure such as roads and utilities, which will build on recent city investments in the surrounding Bayview community, while delivering a safer and more reliable water system that will serve the whole community.

The project will restore public shoreline access and create a network of parks, trails, and open spaces. In a nod to the site's sports legacy, several public spaces and streets are planned to honor Giants and 49ers legends, including Willie Mays, Bill Walsh, Joe Montana, and Jerry Rice.
