Mayor Lurie Advises San Franciscans On How To Prepare For Heavy Rain And Wind

SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today shared guidance for San Franciscans navigating the heavy rain and wind currently affecting the city. Right now, San Francisco is experiencing an atmospheric river and strong winds, causing minor flooding along roadways, with the potential for power outages and hazardous conditions from downed trees or power lines.
“Today, San Francisco is experiencing heavy rain and strong winds which can quickly lead to dangerous conditions,” said Mayor Lurie. “To stay safe today, use caution when traveling to and from work and school, stay away from flooded areas, and monitor emergency alerts from AlertSF.”

As of 9:30 AM, power outages and storm damage remain limited—the latest information on outages is available through the PG&E outage map, and updated weather forecasts are available at weather.gov/BayArea. San Francisco is currently under a flood advisory until at least 1:00 PM and wind advisory until at least 12:00 PM.
Roads in Golden Gate Park including the intersections of MLK and Transverse drives, 25th Avenue and Lincoln, and northbound Sunset Boulevard from Irving Street to MLK Drive are closed due to flooding. Stern Grove, Pine Lake, the San Francisco Botanical Garden, and Japanese Tea Garden are closed and expected to reopen later today.
During a storm like this, the most important things for San Franciscans to remember include:

  • Exercise caution while traveling, whether you’re driving, taking transit, riding a bike, or walking. Flooding, strong winds, and poor visibility mean we have to be extra vigilant—wearing bright colors can also help people stand out.
  • People can protect their homes from flooding with free sandbags from San Francisco Public Works—available at the operations yard at Marin Street and Kansas Street gates from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
  • Stay away from flooded areas, whether in a vehicle or on foot, and treat all power lines as live. Use 311 to report flooding and clogged catch basins.
  • San Franciscans can sign up for emergency alerts by texting their zip code to 888-777. Additional guidance on how to stay safe during an atmospheric river is available at sf.gov/storms.
