Get connected: Build your San Francisco emergency support network
One of the most powerful ways to prepare for a disaster is by building strong connections with the people around you.

When emergencies happen, it’s your neighbors, local organizations, and community networks who are often the first to help.
Getting connected means:
- Knowing who on your block you can turn to for help—and offer to help
- Working together to ensure your neighborhood is safe and informed
- Identifying who might need extra assistance in an emergency
Below are ways to get involved and strengthen your community ties in San Francisco:
- Volunteer with the City of San Francisco - Visit SFGov’s Volunteer Page to find a wide range of opportunities to gain skills, meet neighbors, and contribute to your city’s emergency readiness.
- Join Nextdoor - Connect with your neighbors digitally through Nextdoor, where you can share resources, stay informed, and build your local support network.
- Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS) - Help maintain critical communications during disasters by volunteering as a licensed ham radio operator with ACS—an essential part of San Francisco’s emergency response.
- Disaster Healthcare Volunteer (DHV) Program - Licensed medical professionals can join the San Francisco DHV Program to provide care and support during public health emergencies.
We all come together to help each other in times of emergency. Your community includes the people in your neighborhood and your online networks.
