History
One of the most extraordinary civic buildings in the United States, San Francisco City Hall rose from the rubble of the 1906 earthquake to become both the symbol of a resilient citizenry and the epicenter of a city in constant change.
Winner of an Emmy Award in 2016, The People’s Palace documentary commemorates this remarkable piece of architecture and the dramatic events that have taken place under its dome: labor strife, political assassinations, civil rights struggles, and celebrations that have forged the character of contemporary San Francisco.
Events and rentals
City Hall is available for a wide array of private events, such as weddings, galas, receptions, dinners, and celebrations. The City Hall Events Office licenses all private rentals in the building. As part of the General Services Agency, our work is overseen by the Office of the City Administrator.

- The San Francisco Film Commission regulates commercial film and photography.
- The Recreation and Park Department manages the Civic Center Plaza.
Accessibility
City Hall is made fully accessible by ADA-compliant entrances and elevators.
ADA accessible entrances are located on the Van Ness Avenue, Grove Street and Goodlett Place (Polk Street) sides of the building. Accessible restrooms are located on every floor.

Administration
The City Hall Events Office is part of the Office of the City Administrator for the City and County of San Francisco. This Office, overseen by the City Administrator, Carmen Chu, is the highest-ranking non-elected official in the City and County. who is responsible for 1,000 dedicated employees, and an annual budget of nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars.
The City Administrator is strongly committed to strengthening the local economy, ensuring the efficacy of government services, increasing the City’s safety and resiliency, and optimizing the City’s capital planning and infrastructure.
All City and County positions, including those in the City Hall Events Office, are hired through the City’s Department of Human Resources.
Lost items
Lost items found in City Hall are delivered to City Hall Room 008. Please contact the Building Management Office at 415-554-4933 to inquire about your lost item.
After 90-days, items will be donated to charity or disposed of in accordance with California Civil Code Sections 2080 – 2080.6. If San Francisco Sheriffs determine a lost item could be hazardous, they reserve the right to dispose of the item immediately.
