From 1947 to 1971, California prohibited women from bartending—big mistake. On May 27, 1971, the California Supreme Court struck down the ban. This year marks the 55th anniversary of women being legally allowed to bartend in California. Legacy bar Horseshoe Tavern is spearheading a citywide celebration on May 27, 2026. Visit a participating bar between 5 - 7 PM, and support the female bar owners, bartenders, and industry partners who make SF’s nightlife what it is.
