Stationary Engineers, Local 39 - Apprenticeship Application Announcement

To qualify for an Apprentice Stationary Engineer role with the City and County of San Francisco, applicants must meet several minimum qualifications. These include being on the current International Union of Operating Engineers, Stationary Engineers Local 39 Apprentice Eligible List and possession of a valid California Driver’s License, among other requirements.

Overview

The City and County of San Francisco’s Department of Human Resources, ApprenticeshipSF team is excited to share an upcoming opportunity on behalf of our labor partners, The International Union of Operating Engineers, Stationary Engineers, Local 39, to apply to take their apprenticeship test. Please note, this is an announcement for application for apprenticeships, NOT a job announcement.

Pre-Registration

All applicants must complete online pre-registration prior to appearing in person.

  • Pre-Registration opens on April 20, 2026, at 8:00 AM.
  • Online pre-registration does not constitute a completed application.

When

After completing online pre-registration, applicants must appear in person to a designated registration location for verification of required documents. Pre-registration alone does not complete the application. Applicants who fail to appear in person for document verification during the published registration window will be disqualified.

Applications will be verified at the Stationary Engineers offices listed below beginning Monday, May 11, 2026, and ending Friday, May 15, 2026 (Monday through Friday) between the hours of 9:00 AM and 12:30 PM only. NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED ON TESTING DATES.

NOTE: Applications cannot be taken out of the offices, and all must be filled out without assistance. Completion of online pre-registration does not waive the requirement for in-person document verification.

NOTE: Separate lists are established for each Area. You cannot transfer between Areas and can apply for only one Area to take the test. All people discovered on more than one list will be disqualified from all Area lists.

Union Requirements

  1. Must be at least 18 years old by May 31, 2026; and
  2. Have verification of High School graduation, State High School Proficiency Certificate or G.E.D. equivalent. A copy of a document verifying one of the above requirements must be submitted at the time of in-person document verification and documents may not be returned. Documents MUST BE PRESENTED IN ENGLISH. Consulate of individual Countries may be contacted regarding translation; and
  3. A valid picture I.D., i.e., Driver's License, Passport, etc. must be presented at time of in-person verification

Digital Test

Applicants who successfully complete online pre-registration and in-person document verification will be instructed where and when the test will be given at the time they verify documents in person. The tests will be conducted during the month of June 2026, unless otherwise notified. A passing score of seventy-two 72 percent correct answers is required. Eligible candidates will be ranked by their test scores. It is anticipated that this list will be in effect for two years.

NOTE: All current apprentice eligibility lists will expire on July 31, 2026. Any person remaining on the eligibility list will be required to fill out another application and test again.
