Sign types

Learn the differences between a projecting, wall, roof, and freestanding sign.

All types of signs can be used to identify a business.

Use these definitions to help complete the sign permit.

Projecting sign

Projecting signs stick out from the building, usually perpendicular to the wall.

Wall sign

Wall signs are installed on a wall, either:

  • Painted directly on the wall
  • Placed flat against the wall

Roof sign

Roof signs are located on the roof. They can be either:

  • Painted on the roof
  • Supported directly by the roof
  • Supported by a frame built on the roof

Freestanding sign

Freetanding signs are:

  • Supported only by columns or a post
  • Not attached to the building
