Marianne Szeto, MPH

Marianne Szeto is the Acting Deputy Director of Community Wellness in the Community Health Equity and Promotion Branch (CHEP) at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Marianne brings nearly two decades of experience in public health, with a focus on community partnerships, collaboration, and health equity.

Marianne has served as the Director of the Shape Up San Francisco Initiative, working with partners to advance policy, systems, and environmental initiatives that promote nutrition, physical activity, and community wellness. This collective work helped lay the groundwork for the San Francisco Sugary Drinks Distributor Tax (Soda Tax), creating an important funding stream for chronic disease prevention. Marianne also provides strategic support and direction for the Sugary Drinks Distributor Tax Advisory Committee, whose charge is to evaluate the impact of the tax on public health, consumption, and sales, and to support the development of recommendations that are community-informed, data-driven, and evidence-based.

As Acting Deputy Director, Marianne provides strategic leadership to Community Wellness programs and works closely with staff, partners, and local stakeholders to advance equitable, sustainable health outcomes citywide. Her approach centers thoughtful collaboration, data-informed decision-making, and a deep commitment to ensuring CHEP’s programs reflect and uplift the communities they serve.
