Storage and Preservation of Specimen - Fresh stool must be transferred to paired PVA and formalin vials within 30 to 60 minutes of collection.

Paired PVA and formalin vials must be received at room temperature (15 to 25°C) within 10 days of collection. Do not refrigerate the sample.

Minimum Volume Required - Fluid in collection vials must reach maximum fill volume indicated on outside of vial (do NOT overfill)

Additional Collection Instructions - Catch the stool specimen in a clean, empty widemouthed container or place plastic wrap over the opening of the toilet bowl to prevent the stool specimen from falling into the bowl. Introduce stool into vials in small amounts such that level does not exceed fill-line on label. Use the spoon attached to the cap to mix the contents. Cap securely and shake vials to distribute the sample into the preservative. Label the vials with the patient's name, date of birth, date of collection and time of collection.

Negative result does not exclude the possibility of infection. A series of three specimens is considered minimum for an adequate examination. Stool specimens should be collected every other day within a time frame of no more than 10 days.

Certain drugs and compounds will interfere with testing. Specimens should be collected before administration of antacids, barium, bismuth, mineral oil, antidiarrheal preparations, or other substances. Allow 7 to 10 days for barium or bismuth product effects to clear and 2 to 3 weeks for antimicrobial agents to clear the system before specimen collection.

Sample must not be contaminated with urine or water. Failure to observe proper procedures in any one of these steps can lead to incorrect results. There is a risk of false-positive and false-negative results caused by improperly collected, transported or and handled specimens
