Respirator Medical Qualification
Cal/OSHA requires that employees be medically cleared before wearing a respirator. Wearing a respirator may place a physiological burden on an employee that varies depending on the type of respirator, job duties, workplace conditions, and the employee's medical status. For some employees, wearing a respirator may not be medically appropriate.
Department of Public Health (DPH) Employees
Occupational Health Services (OHS) provides Respirator Medical Clearance screenings for City and County of San Francisco (CCSF) employees.
If you need a Respirator Medical Clearance screening, call us to schedule an appointment.
If you were previously cleared by OHS to wear a respirator but have experienced a new medical condition, weight loss or gain, facial surgery, or dental work, please call us to schedule a new evaluation.
University of California San Francisco Employees (UCSF)
UCSF employees should contact UCSF Occupational Health Services for information about respirator medical clearance.

1. Can I get my N95 Fit Test done at ZSFG?
Yes. Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) provides N95 respirator fit testing for employees working at ZSFG.

2. What type of fit testing is available?
Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) provides both qualitative and quantitative fit testing for N95 respirators. For more information, visit the EH&S Respirator Program site.
3. I am unable to tolerate the qualitative fit test. Are other testing options available?
Yes. Other fit testing options are available. Please email Environmental Health & Safety for more information.
4. I have facial hair. Can I be fit tested for an N95 respirator?
Some facial hairstyles may be compatible with respirator fit testing. Facial hair must not cross the respirator sealing surface, as it can interfere with the respirator's seal and reduce its effectiveness. Please contact Environmental Health & Safety for more information.
5. I am unable to shave my facial hair. What should I do?
If you are unable to achieve a proper seal with an N95 respirator because of facial hair, you cannot wear a tight-fitting N95 respirator for work that requires one.
