CDPH Health Alert: Increase of Measles in California
Disease Prevention and ControlOn February 4, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a health alert notifying healthcare providers to be on the lookout for measles in patients presenting with a fever, rash, and other symptoms consistent with measles, followed by a press release urging vaccination following the recent rise in cases across the state. To date, there have been no measles cases reported in San Francisco residents since 2019.
Key messages for healthcare providers:
- Consider measles in persons presenting with a fever, rash, and other symptoms consistent with measles.
- Immediately institute airborne precautions to prevent nosocomial measles exposures.
- Ensure all patients, especially those planning international travel, are fully vaccinated against measles.
Clinicians should remain vigilant for measles and immediately call the SFDPH Communicable Disease program 24/7 at 628-217-6100 to report any suspected cases of measles and arrange for expedited laboratory testing if indicated. For more information, see prior SFDPH measles health advisory.
