A statement of solidarity from the Human Rights Commission
San Francisco has long stood as a beacon of inclusion, justice, and hope. The City's namesake, St. Francis, was known for his compassion for and service to others. Here, neighbors look after one another, and care for each other. And here, we defend the rights of all people to live openly and free from fear, intimidation, and discrimination.
The Human Rights Commission stands in solidarity with immigrant communities here in San Francisco and across the nation. We abhor violence, threats, and menacing directed toward any individual or group, especially acts that in any way violate the civil rights of residents or San Francisco's anti-discrimination laws.
Immigrant rights are human rights. Immigrants are a part of the fabric of our communities. Like all of us, immigrants are workers, neighbors, caregivers, and leaders. Their contributions are vital to our collective future and should be honored, not met with anger and hostility.
As a Sanctuary City, San Francisco has enshrined protections to ensure that no resident is targeted, profiled, or excluded because of their immigration status. HRC will not divert from our obligation to investigate discrimination where it is discovered. We remain available to every resident of San Francisco — regardless of their status — who requires our services, as is our chartered mandate.
Compassion and collaboration will be our guiding lights during this time of difficulty, uncertainty, and turmoil. HRC will continue to live out its mission of being centered and rooted in community; the department’s commitment to lifting up, protecting, and defending the voice, the needs, and the rights of San Francisco’s most vulnerable remains unchanged.
