December 10 marks Human Rights Day, observed annually since 1948, when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration is a milestone document proclaiming that all people everywhere are inherently entitled to inalienable rights to health, safety, dignity, and freedom from discrimination and unjust treatment. These are universal and non-negotiable rights owed to every human being.
Since 1964, the San Francisco Human Rights Commission (HRC) has upheld its mandate to confront prejudice, intolerance, bigotry, and discrimination. In service to those who live and work in the City and County of San Francisco – regardless of identity or status – the HRC provides policy advice around civil rights and human rights issues, investigates violations of the City’s anti-discrimination laws, and provides technical assistance, information, and referrals for service to community members and groups, among other services.
Recognizing the humanity in one another is central to our work and foundational to our mission. As the world commemorates Human Rights Day 2025, HRC is proud to continue living its purpose as the conscience of the City, protecting, promoting, and lifting up civil rights and human rights for all its people.
